NOMB Changes – Positive change in our society and our environment through surfing.

Dorothea Neu

aka Doro
Co-founder | Secretary

Hello,

I am Doro. In 2015, I quit my permanent job at a travel guide publishing company to work for a surf school on an island in the middle of the Atlantic that was unknown to me until then.

That was the beginning of many things: my connection to this very special place, my passion for surfing, new paths, wishes, and ventures – and my friendship with Angie, Annette, and Chicken.

Now, I live in the beautiful Allgäu, surrounded by nature. I work as a freelancer in online marketing and editorial, and I am a trained hiking guide and mental coach. My heart beats for the outdoors, quality (online) content, physical and mental movement, empowerment, and equality.

And of course, for the sea and surfing. For me, surfing is much more than just a sport – it’s a connection to the ocean, a challenge and teacher, a space for experiences, and a tool. I am happy and grateful to bring about great changes in small steps together with all the NOMB Changers.

See you out there,
Doro

… Goodbye all my friends
Don′t worry ’bout me
I′ll send you a postcard from where I will be
And sure I’ll come back, there is no doubt
But now I go out, I go out

Well I smell the wind and I follow the track
But it also feels good to know I will go back
Out in the wild, free and alone
But I’ll always know that I will go home …

If NOMB Changes were a superheroine, what supernatural abilities would she have and how would she change the world?

She would have the ability to be heard and understood anywhere in the world. Equally, she would have the ability to listen, read between the lines, and hear what is meant, not just what is said. With this, she could bring rivals to the table, resolve conflicts, eliminate injustices, and unite people.

And she would always have a bit of swell in her carry-on – besides all the good words, it is often the shared experiences that bring people closer together. And what better way to do that than a shared surf session followed by a picnic on the beach?

What do you bring to NOMB Changes:

My passion for nature and sports. The conviction that sports in general and surfing in particular can be very powerful drivers of change. The belief that you can go further together than alone.

Additionally, my experience in online marketing and (digital) structures and processes, curiosity, a critical eye, and the willingness to continually engage with new topics.

3 things you like:

♡ the feeling of connection
♡ sitting by the ocean, lost in thoughts
♡ good conversations

3 things you don’t like:
X Privilege blindness
X Hanging socks
X
Licorice (Note from the interviewer Angie: This did accidentally end up on the wrong list? Please?!?!?!)

What is your challenge?

Sometimes I want too much – and that too quickly. (Even back in my track and field days, I was an excellent sprinter and a rather below-average long-distance runner. 😉 )

At NOMB Changes, this sometimes challenges me because I see all that still needs to be done and what we’d like to achieve – and then it frustrates me that I don’t progress as quickly as I’d like to. After all, we’re all doing this “on the side” in our spare time. In these moments, my colleagues Patience and Endurance sit next to me on the couch, raising their eyebrows and shaking their heads amusedly. 😉
