Susanna Klöti

Hey there,

they call me “Chicken” in the surf community, a name that sticks like wax on a board. My real name’s Susanna, but out on the waves, I’m just Chicken. It’s kind of a badge of honor, earned from those early days when I’d doze off on my board, still managing to ride the waves somehow.

My love for surfing goes back to 2015 Fuerteventura. It was Angie who let me paddle into the open shores of Cotillo Beach. Since then, I’ve been chasing waves across the globe. Longing for that feeling of freedom even when I’m landlocked in Lucerne, Switzerland. The cool thing about it? I find surfbuddies wherever life takes me.

For me surfing isn’t just about catching waves. It’s a lifelong lesson in patience and resilience. Every wipeout teaches me to pick myself up and paddle back out… well, most of the times.😉

When I’m not riding waves, you’ll find me at church, serving as a priest for the reformed church of Switzerland. And from this summer on, in Honolulu Hawaii. My job allows me to foster justice and equality within my community, just like the ocean teaches me to navigate life’s ebb and flow.

Catch you on the next wave, Chicken

Fun facts about Chicken

Describe yourself in a song:
“Sometimes I feel the fear of uncertainty stinging it clear, but whatever tomorrow brings, I’ll be there” – (Incubus, Drive)

Yes, that fits me as chicken. You know how often I sit out in the open sea on my surfboard, masking the uncertainty and fear—either with loud singing or joking around with the people in the lineup. When the wave comes, I encourage myself: “If they are too strong, they are too weak!” With frantic paddling and a lot of determination, I often manage to catch the wave. This image reflects so many areas of my life… I let life and the world come to me. The more unexpected and adventurous, the more exciting it is for me. Whatever may come, I welcome it with open arms and make the best of it. I hope you do the same!

If NOMB Changes were a superheroine, what supernatural abilities would she have and how would she change the world?
NOMB Changes would have the power to alter physical reality. She could change the structure of objects and landscapes to remove obstacles or create shelters. Bringing nature back to its roots. Or simply putting a sea in many landlocked states so that everyone could benefit from the feeling of surfing the ocean waves. It’s a bit self-serving, of course, but yes, I would be thrilled!

What do you bring to NOMB Changes:
What deeply moves and often challenges me is how we handle our privileges in the Western world, especially here in Switzerland. I feel a strong urge to use my privileges meaningfully to help and support others. As a pastor, I am particularly committed to community engagement and striving for social justice. Additionally, I have a strong fondness for mischief and look forward to creating space for joy and carefree moments alongside a critical perspective on things. In the role of Changes, I hope to bring this mix of serious commitment and cheerful lightness to not only tackle challenges but also to promote joy and solidarity.

What puts you in a good mood when you’re in a bad mood:
I call my very best wakesurfing friend, let him know that I’m coming round as soon as possible and throw myself into the water and onto the wakesurfboard. His good vibes and the cold lake water make me feel alive again. Everything seems to be forgotten very quickly.

What do you wish you’d known earlier:
That life doesn’t have to be the way I imagined it for years… I can also spend my life in rental flats (without a princess castle), with a thousand loved ones (without children) and a best friend (without a spouse).

What surprises people when they get to know you better personally:
That pastors are also just human beings who love Schabernack just as much and also make their human mistakes.

Dorothea Neu

Hello,

I am Doro. In 2015, I quit my permanent job at a travel guide publishing company to work for a surf school on an island in the middle of the Atlantic that was unknown to me until then.

That was the beginning of many things: my connection to this very special place, my passion for surfing, new paths, wishes, and ventures – and my friendship with Angie, Annette, and Chicken.

Now, I live in the beautiful Allgäu, surrounded by nature. I work as a freelancer in online marketing and editorial, and I am a trained hiking guide and mental coach. My heart beats for the outdoors, quality (online) content, physical and mental movement, empowerment, and equality.

And of course, for the sea and surfing. For me, surfing is much more than just a sport – it’s a connection to the ocean, a challenge and teacher, a space for experiences, and a tool. I am happy and grateful to bring about great changes in small steps together with all the NOMB Changers.

See you out there,
Doro

… Goodbye all my friends

I′ll send you a postcard from where I will be
And sure I’ll come back, there is no doubt
But now I go out, I go out

Well I smell the wind and I follow the track
But it also feels good to know I will go back
Out in the wild, free and alone
But I’ll always know that I will go home …

If NOMB Changes were a superheroine, what supernatural abilities would she have and how would she change the world?

She would have the ability to be heard and understood anywhere in the world. Equally, she would have the ability to listen, read between the lines, and hear what is meant, not just what is said. With this, she could bring rivals to the table, resolve conflicts, eliminate injustices, and unite people.

And she would always have a bit of swell in her carry-on – besides all the good words, it is often the shared experiences that bring people closer together. And what better way to do that than a shared surf session followed by a picnic on the beach?

What do you bring to NOMB Changes:

My passion for nature and sports. The conviction that sports in general and surfing in particular can be very powerful drivers of change. The belief that you can go further together than alone.

Additionally, my experience in online marketing and (digital) structures and processes, curiosity, a critical eye, and the willingness to continually engage with new topics.

3 things you like:

♡ the feeling of connection
♡ sitting by the ocean, lost in thoughts
♡ good conversations

3 things you don’t like:
X Privilege blindness
X Hanging socks
X
Licorice (Note from the interviewer Angie: This did accidentally end up on the wrong list? Please?!?!?!)

What is your challenge?

Sometimes I want too much – and that too quickly. (Even back in my track and field days, I was an excellent sprinter and a rather below-average long-distance runner. 😉 )

At NOMB Changes, this sometimes challenges me because I see all that still needs to be done and what we’d like to achieve – and then it frustrates me that I don’t progress as quickly as I’d like to. After all, we’re all doing this “on the side” in our spare time. In these moments, my colleagues Patience and Endurance sit next to me on the couch, raising their eyebrows and shaking their heads amusedly. 😉

Annette Wahle

Hi,

I am Annette Wahle. When I was booking my first surf course in 2013 on Fuerteventura I was expecting lots of sunshine, some sports aciticities, having fun and maybe meeting some nice people. What I got was lots of sunshine, muscle pain, fun, friendships lasting until today and a new love: surfing.

Ever since surfing has opened many doors for me: to the ocean, to people, to places and to myself. And it got me a new nickname: Bombette.

After living in Düsseldorf, Kampala and Hamburg, I am now back in my hometown Munich. My favorite animal is the pangolin, that’s why I have one on my surfboard.

Children’s rights, women’s rights, intercultural encounters and civic engagement are issues close to my heart, which also concern me professionally and which I would like to combine with surfing at NOMB Changes.

Cheerio, your Bombette

Fun facts about Bombette

Describe yourself in a song: I am more of a wildly mixed playlist.

IIf NOMB Changes were a superheroine, what supernatural abilities would she have and how would she change the world: They could teleport people to the exact wave they need at that moment. Whether it’s small and gentle, big and steep, lots of white water, or clean lines. Everyone leaves the water happier than they entered, and this inner peace radiates out into the world.

What do you bring to NOMB Changes: A love for surfing and the experience of how surfing can change lives. Ideas, methods, and concepts. Children’s rights, participation, and female empowerment. Many years of experience in youth work and various NGOs. Training as a lawyer, mediator, and change manager. Expertise in child protection and intercultural sensitivity. Curiosity to learn new things, to take on different perspectives, and to push the boundaries of the comfort zone. Mischief and always a bit of neon.

Why are you committed to NOMB Changes and not another NGO: Because I want to make a difference in the world, in society, and in individuals. At NOMB Changes, I can combine this with surfing. As founders, we have complete creative freedom for our projects and the conditions that are important to us. – And we are the dream team!

What was the happiest moment for you at NOMB Changes: When we make a difference for someone with our offerings and make them shine for a moment or even longer. That makes my heart open wide.

Angelika Ringleb

Aloha,

my name is Angie Ringleb. I was born in the United States and grew up in Essen, Ruhrpott Germany. After school I went to explore the world, and eventually studied International Tourism & Hospitality management at London Metropolitan University.

I now live on Fuerteventura and run my own surfschool, NOMB Surf. NOMB is short for Nature-Ocean-Mind-Body, and for me represents the four fundamental pillars for living a balanced life. During the past 11 years of professional surfcoaching, I have trained myself in different areas, I have tried and erred and designed specific surfcoaching methods.

In 2022 I started being involved in the training of surfers with disabilities. There is still so much to learn for me, for the sport and for our society. Making surfing accessible for everyone, and using is as a therapeutical tool, that is one of the main goals I am aiming for personally.

Since being young, I have felt the urge to change the world for the better. I feel very strong about injustice. When I was 11 years old, I decided to stop eating animals, a few years ago I changed to a completely plant based diet. I have always tried to create positive changes around me, tried to motivate the people close to me, tried to embody tolerance and face life and its problems directly. Being confronted with opposition threw me of balance a few times, but it has not stopped me.

My admiration for mother nature became even stronger when I started surfing. The connection with the waves makes the ocean my home, my place of refuge, my healing and also my challenge. The sport of surfing is unique, it moves so much inside of me and offers me unlimited possibilities of positive usage.

All my attempts to change the world around me made me connect with incredible people. They supported me, motivated me and, also through criticism, made me grow. But at the end of the day it was always me, Angie.

Mid 2021 I reached a point where ´just Angie´ just wasn’t enough anymore. Born was the idea of NOMB Changes and using surfing as a tool to create positive changes in our society and environment on a larger scale.

Life has chosen to make my way cross with Annette, Chicken and Doro. All at different times but every time here in the waves of Fuerteventura. People always say: things happen for a reason. I know now why we ended up being friends instead of just passing through each other’s lifes. Forming one big dream out of several individual ones turned us into a real dreamteam. I am excited and looking forward to the path ahead of us.

If you share our thoughts and ideology, we would be honoured to welcome you as a NOMB Changes. Alone we are a drop, together we are an ocean.

Sea you there. Love Angie

Fun facts about Angie

Describe yourself in a song:

Werde dir deines Bewusstseins bewusst

If NOMB Changes were a superheroine, what supernatural abilities would she have and how would she change the world? Super-Uschi would be somewhat like Robin Hood (with less illegality and even more empathy). She would be known for helping the needy and oppressed, embodying the fight against injustice and supporting the weak and disadvantaged. She would make this world fairer for humans, animals, and Mother Nature alike.

What do you bring to NOMB Changes: my love for the ocean, the sport of surfing and for life. My expertise in surfcoaching, management and leadership. And also a little bit of my Schabernack attitude.

What are you currently learning: Someone once told me that for me standing still is a step backwards. I am someone who is constantly learning. At this particular moment I am studying sustainable destination branding & marketing.

What has been your happiest surfing moment so far: I have had way too many happy surfing moments to be able to pick one. Surfing in Rapa Nui was magical and is definately something I will always remember. But to be honest, I am having fun wherever I surf, and especially when I am surrounded by Schabernack people.

When and how did you realize that surfing is more than just a sport for you? Is there a specific situation you remember: the moment I was handed a surfboard and jumped into the Pacific. I still remember it, like it was yesterday. Even what the sky looked like that day. Something inside me shifted, and so many things started to make sense. It was like falling in love, head over heals.

Which NOMB Changes moment(s) do you particularly enjoy remembering: the moment the four of us met at Munich central train station. Against all odds. It was freezing cold but that was the day NOMB Changes became reality. We celebrated with a bottle of Champagne and a platform dance. It’s hard to beat this moment.
