Surfing over 60: The Goldies Surf Gang takes on Galicia

Who says surfing is just for the young? In September, I had the absolute pleasure of spending a week in Galicia with five incredible women in their 60s, our legendary Goldies Surf Gang. These ladies came from all walks of life, each with her own story, her own reason to join, and one thing in common: curiosity and courage.

A new adventure begins

Getting to Galicia wasn’t the easiest part. With tricky flight connections and a long travel day ahead, the adventure already started long before the airport. But once they had all arrived and met for the first time, even the initial uncertainty of spending a week with strangers in an unknown place quickly faded. By the end of the first evening, the group was laughing, sharing their llifestories, and raising glasses to what would become an unforgettable week.

Surfing over 60: the Goldies Surf Gang 2025

Facing the waves and loving it

For many of the Goldies, surfing had always seemed like something other people did. But once we hit the beach, wetsuits on and boards ready, everything changed. Sure, there was hesitation. But there was also determination and a lot of laughter.

Day by day, the women grew more confident. They learned to paddle with rhythm, to pop up with power, and to find their balance on the board. Watching them in the water was pure joy. Surfing over 60 isn’t about chasing the biggest wave. It’s about celebrating movement, joy, and connection with the ocean.

Strong, agile, and unstoppable

What impressed me most wasn’t just their progress, but their physical and mental fitness. These women moved with grace and energy, motivated from the first paddle to the last sunset stretch. Their level of agility and balance would inspire any younger surfer. It reminded me once again that age has absolutely nothing to do with ability.

Outside the water, the mornings started with mobility sessions to loosen up, and evenings ended with long dinners filled with stories, laughter, games and few tired but happy muscles.

Connection, courage, and community

Our week in Galicia became a space of connection. Connection with the ocean, with each other, and with oneself. The Goldies showed that courage doesn’t come with age. It grows when we allow ourselves to step out of our comfort zones and try something new.

This Goldies experience also planted a seed for something else. Back on Fuerteventura, I founded the Las Doradas Surf Club, a local initiative offering regular surf and ocean sessions for women aged 50 and above. The club carries the same spirit the Goldies brought to Galicia: curiosity, community, and confidence.

Why surfing over 60 is worth it

Surfing at any age challenges body and mind in the best possible way. It keeps you mobile, improves coordination and strength, and lifts your mood like nothing else. For women over 60, it can be especially empowering, a chance to rediscover physical confidence and connect with nature in a whole new way.

If you’re thinking, “I could never do that,” think again. None of the Goldies had surfed before this trip, and all of them caught waves. They paddled out, laughed hard, and proved that surfing isn’t about age but about giving yourself permission to play.

Join the movement

At NOMB Changes, we believe in making surfing accessible to everyone, regardless of age, background, or ability. If you want to support projects like the Goldies Surf Gang or the Las Doradas Surf Club, you can become a member or donate to help us bring more women into the waves.

And the story continues. Goldies Surf Gang 2026 is already being planned. If you want to be part of it or simply stay in the loop, sign up for our newsletter to be the first to hear when the next adventure is announced. For more inspiration, check out projects like Sassysilversurfers.

The Goldies Surf Gang might have started as a single trip, but the waves they created keep rolling. Come join us. The ocean is waiting.

Treasure box: Surf Event Bern 2023 (community surf)

Juhu, I’m Chicken, one of the founders of this great association and the brain behind this surf event in Bern.

I live in Switzerland, in beautiful Lucerne to be precise, and work here as a pastor at the Reformed Church. We pastors know each other across parishes, and so some time ago I was asked by the parish of Köniz and invited to organize a surf day for families with children and young people together with them. My reputation as a surfer and founder of NOMB Changes probably precedes me.

A day should be organized on the subject of waves of life, connected to the important values of equality and equal opportunities. On a warm August day, NOMB Changes was a guest in the municipality of Köniz, in the beautiful Swiss city of Bern.

Reunion at the setting up the surf event

In the morning I was up early, the anticipation of finally seeing the NOMB Changes team again and working together was so great. Since the four of us (Annette, Angie, Doro and I) all live in different places or countries, every meeting is a gift and is celebrated.

Our reunion in the parking lot of the public swimming pool was correspondingly intense. Lots of hugs, laughter and, of course, a little bit of Schabernack could not be missing. In order to prepare and coordinate the surf event in peace, we met a few hours beforehand. Together with Pastor Philipp Kohli we built up and started the surf day motivated.

Get on the boards and let’s go

Shortly after the first balance boards, pedalos and other balancing devices were set up on the square, the first children were already balancing across the pool square, with beaming faces and filled hearts. The event hadn’t even officially started yet.

You can imagine our anticipation. NOMB Changer Annette was tireless in helping children to balance, providing information and spreading good cheer. And before you know it, the surf event was in full swing.

Equal opportunities in water and on land

It was particularly pleasing that many girls and young women felt attracted to surfing. Girls of all ages enthusiastically romped around the balance landscape and queued up to start paddling on the surfboards in the pool. Fears and insecurities of being in the water were addressed and overcome, proud eyes twinkled around us. Seeing that confirmed to me right away that we can make something important happen here.

We believe in equal opportunities and inclusion, values that are reflected in all our projects. When we saw a young boy watching us with his mother at the edge of the pool, while his sister was busy paddling through the pool, we approached the two and invited them to take part. For us, disabilities, whether physical or mental, are no reason not to be able to enjoy surfing. On the contrary. We are convinced of the positive impact that surfing has as a therapeutic tool. The happy squeaking of our surfer confirmed this once more.

Great fun on the surfboards

Equal rights and equal opportunities were talked about and discussed with interested parents while surfboards were gliding over the water next door. Our NOMB changers in the water, surf coaches Angie and Lindis, were not given a break. The motivation of the children and young people could be felt and all courses were fully booked. Spontaneously interested children were of course also allowed to go on the board for a short time, and so there was a lot of paddling in the pool for beginners.

On the meadow next to the balance landscape, the first children and young people practiced the pop-up, which gave them the perfect preparation for surfing in the water, so that they could really perform on the surfboard in the pool. But even without pop-up training, all participants made it onto the surfboard or SUP. At the end of each course, everyone was allowed to squeeze onto the SUP together and do a few fun laps through the pool.

A happy team of NOMB Changers

As confirmation that they had been participating, everyone received a NOMB Changes sticker tattoo, which many children were particularly proud of. Siii, the NOMB Changer Community is constantly growing. In addition, there were Polaroid photos by star photographer and NOMB Changer Miris, who captured important moments and memories for the participants of this surfing event.

A relaxed atmosphere, beaming faces, laughter and shouts of joy filled the Badi with lots of positive vibes. Especially when, thanks to a rubbish campaign, the public pool was freed from the little rubbish that had been collected by the participating young people. The preservation of creation is also important to us in the outdoor pool! The prize was a NOMB Changes shirt, which was worn proudly.

A successful surf event far away from the sea

An unforgettable experience for young and old. Of course, surfing is not the same outside the sea, but even without waves, the sport of surfing can move a lot. This wonderful day showed me again that surfing is an important tool to initiate lasting changes. Through the connection with surfing and nature, in the individual and in society.

Big thanks goes out to the local pastor Philipp. Thanks for your trust and support, we feel honoured to have joined you and your community.

Treasure box: The Power of Breath (Breast Cancer Recovery)

Surfing is not only a thrilling water sport but also a source of inspiration for techniques that can benefit us in various aspects of life. In a recent workshop held by us at Luise von Marillac Clinic in Bad Überkingen, Germany, 15 women undergoing rehabilitation for breast cancer had the opportunity to explore breathing techniques derived from the world of surfing. The workshop, facilitated by Angie and Annette, two of the founders of NOMB Changes, aimed to empower these women in their recovery journey by teaching them adaptable breathing techniques that can be applied not only in challenging breast cancer treatments but also in everyday life situations.

Beyond the Waves

Annette personally experienced the benefits of these breathing techniques during her breast cancer treatment. As Angie planned to visit her during her rehabilitation stay at Luise von Marillac Clinic Annette encouraged her Angie to apply her knowledge beyond the realm of surfing. Angie, being passionate about empowering others, gladly agreed to pass on her proficiency. Together, they tailored the techniques to suit the needs of the breast cancer rehab participants, ensuring their applicability in everyday life situations.

A Surfer’s Breath

Angie, a professional surf coach, shared her knowledge and expertise with the participants, highlighting the importance of breathing in surfing and how it can be applied outside the ocean. The workshop focused on four different types of breathing techniques:

  • preparation,
  • performance,
  • recovery,
  • and an emergency breath.

These techniques were designed to enhance overall performance, well-being and resilience, not only in surfing but also in the face of life’s challenges.

The Basics of Breathing

Before diving into the specific breathing techniques, the workshop covered the fundamentals of breathing. The participants learned about the concept of a full breath, which involves utilizing the diaphragm to inhale deeply, filling the lungs to their maximum capacity, and exhaling fully to release any tension or stress. Emphasizing the significance of deep, diaphragmatic breathing for relaxation, stress reduction, and improved mental clarity, the participants learned to understand their ´oxygen tank`. This fundamental technique formed the foundation upon which the other breathing techniques were built.

Interactive Neuro-Centered Brain Activations

Recognizing that the brain sometimes needs a little coaxing to cooperate, the workshop also incorporated fun and interactive neuro-centered brain activations.

These exercises were designed to help participants stimulate their brains and enhance focus, especially during times when the brain may feel uncooperative, especially due to the effects of treatment or recovery.

The women enthusiastically participated in these activities, discovering newfound levels of concentration and mental clarity and the potential to improve their overall cognitive function and mental well-being.

The room was filled with laughter, a bonus of these easy to remember activations.

Taking it to the Streets

The true test of the workshop’s effectiveness came the following day when the women took their newfound knowledge to the beautiful Nordic walking trails surrounding the clinic. Equipped with their breathing techniques, they embarked on their routine, expecting nothing more than a pleasant workout. What they experienced, however, was nothing short of astonishing. The participants reported increased focus, reduced fatigue, and all of them kept within the optimal range of heartrate. The women highlighted the performance breath, which enabled them to tap into a newfound reserve of energy, powering through their workout with ease. The recovery breath brought a sense of tranquillity, as they released any physical and emotional tension after the workout.

Beautiful experience with an impact

The workshop on breathing techniques derived from the world of surfing was a great experience for the 15 women. Under the guidance of our founders Angie and Annette, they discovered the power of the breath as a tool for empowerment and resilience.
These techniques, originally designed for surfing, proved to be adaptable in everyday life situations and also during challenging breast cancer treatments. By incorporating these breathing techniques, the participants unlocked a new tool to stimulate their mental and physical well-being, reinforcing their strength and determination. These techniques, along with the interactive brain activations, empowered the participants to embrace their challenges head-on and discover new strengths within themselves.

To the 15 remarkable women who placed their trust in Angie & Annette, and the power of breath, you are true inspirations. The workshop was a testament to your strength and resilience, hopefully reminding you that you really rock your journey of recovery and beyond.
